graham and i made little comics together. we weren't allowed more than 3-4 minutes a "panel" and it was a lot of fun. i drew the feisty pizza mouse and graham drew the refined indoor mouse.

then i drew first person perspective and he did ghost perspective.

he's a cartoonist so he's a total pro. i am not a pro, but i love drawing with him because he is very funny.

we are putting it to good use! this studio is the first room i have never had to share with anyone in my entire life. it is truly all my own and i thought that the first thing i’d want to do is close the door and be alone and quiet, but the complete opposite happened. all i want to do is share it, to have company and tea at all times in it. i keep the door open.

i am very sad to hear about the passing of dylan williams, the man behind sparkplug comics. i did not know dylan very well, but i knew him well enough to know he was very kind, supportive and hilarious, and it's truly heartbreaking that he's gone. he has touched many lives and will be dearly missed. there have been several fundraisers around town to help pay his medical bills, and i am sure to continue supporting and buying awesome comics from sparkplug will help his family during this very sad time.

it's finally hot in portland!!! and because of this, i felt painting lots of swans and water (for an upcoming show in july) would make me feel calmer/cooler. hmm, it's fun but i think an air conditioner might be better.

quite recently i have found out that among the impressive quantity of medicine i am required to take, i am allergic to penicillin. terrible feelings. anywho while ignoring said terrible feelings, i watched a very lovely movie called "the pleasure of being robbed". it is very quiet and beautiful, has a wandering plot (i like wandering plot movies), has very great music and is the most perfect sick in bed/rainy day movie to watch in the history of ever. i took film stills because, well, graham just taught me how and why not.

fixing holes, getting stuff done, limited prints, saying hello

i've been fixing up an old quilt lately and it's been occupying a lot of my time. i have also been eating a lot of honydew melon and super amazing homemade tacos. i'll post the recipe for the "dirty rice" ~~in a little bit~~ at the bottom of this post. the trick is using aardvark hot sauce on the tacos, as it happens to be the best hot sauce in the universe. i do wish they made a milder version though so my loved ones (brothers aside, who could probably breathe fire at this point) can enjoy it too. i have later'd my tastebuds with my love of spicy things over the years so it doesn't effect me like other people. when i was a kid growing up i ate straight up chili powder. any mexican kids on here remember "lucas chili/limon powder" before it was banned by the FDA god help me, or those mango lollipops encrusted with hot powder? also there were years there where i would dump tapatio and lime juice on all my watermelon. yeah. sorry tastebuds.

anyway, i have been drawing a lot, and then i will be painting for an upcoming show in july.

by the way, i have some limited edition prints available at the hungry eyeball shop! you can get them here (quietly guiding me), here (demon hands), and here (wicked mountain).

the prints really turned out great and i am stoked!

now i am going to go back to lots of work and watching a lot of ghost shows that make me sleep with the light on.
DIRTY RICE
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 teaspoon of cumin
1 heaping tablespoon fresh thyme
1/2 medium-large yellow onion, finely chopped
1 1/2 cups rice (i use brown rice)
3 cups low sodium chicken broth
1 can of black beans
1 lime
in a large pan or pot, pour in olive oil, cumin, thyme, and onion. saute for about 4 minutes on medium/high flame. pour in rice and stir around for about 30 seconds or so. pour in 3 cups of chicken broth and turn the flame down to medium. let simmer until the rice is soft and fluffy, this takes about 25-30 minutes or so and supervision every 8-10 minutes. when the rice is almost done, pour in can of black beans and stir around. let it simmer for a little bit more on a low flame for a few minutes.
when the rice is done squeeze a little lime on it, sprinkle a little salt, and serve.

i've been a little traveling person the past few weeks. most of the traveling was sadly for a memorial service, but it was still a great time. it's often very for long stretches when i can't see my family. in another few i'll be on the road again. i'm probably getting another (but much smaller/less serious this time) operation in about a month or so. i am seriously so ready to be 100%. i never want to see a bed again, and when i AM 100% i will spend all my nights sleeping on our roof with the squirrels and the trees.

what else? i am in art shows! one very soon at grasshut here in portland, the show is about light. i am working super hard on making new things and projects and little books. i will write more about it when my paintings are done and after i answer my overflowing email. so soon!

lately: strawberries overload and flowers are blooming. i can see them from my window and every time i see them i have a mini joy fit! also i have claimed part of our room with a flag. graham does not seem to mind as long as his taxidermy turtle has a place to stay.
in other news, i am feeling better and stronger lately. i can sit up and paint again for a few hours at a time! it feels so good. it's nice to have goals and plans again that do not revolve around medicine or a doctor visit.

cosmos and soup on my brain

i made curried butternut squash today and was surprised that it was so easy.

i put yogurt in it too (when i ladled it into my mug) because it's delicious to do so and because i do what i want. here's the recipe:

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped (about 2 cups)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (2 1/2-pound) butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 1-inch cubes
5-6 cups low-sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth
1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons curry powder
1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more, to taste
2 tablespoons honey
3 lil bay leaves
a pinch of fresh chopped ginger root, a small thumb size

heat up the oil, garlic, and onion until they get a little soft, then add the butternut squash, curry powder and everything else. cover and let it boil for a bit. when the squash gets soft (about 15 minutes into the boiling) turn off the heat, remove the bay leaves, and pour it into a blender. blend. when you pour it back into the pot i recommend grinding in a little pepper and a sprinkle or two more of salt, it brings out the flavor a little more. hooray, instant winter soup that is good for you!

i made a new year resolution to write everyday (or almost everyday) and really journal what is going in my life on so i have more to look back on, and so my mom can see what i am up to. i am starting today!
yesterday:
well hello adrenaline. the apt downstairs had a burning pot and rooms full of smoke, but julianna and i fixed it and put it out best we could and let their poor dogs out till the neighbors got back. SCARY. also it smelt awful! we took turns taking showers afterward to scrub off the awful smoke smell.
since i can't really drink anymore, i am sipping a ginger beer. never had i needed a real beer more, but this will do. it tastes like springtime.

today is the bean's (aka graham's) 28th birthday! old handsome man.
i feel bad spending money right now, especially after lil birthday times for the bean, but i don't regret it. it was too good/cheap to pass up and now a little french basket is my new purse, like jane birkin!

also this song is stuck in my heart/mind all the time, well, when sibylle baier isn't on repeat anyway. this album was one of graham's birthday presents today.

after a very long, hard year where it felt like my normally very full life was put on hold (to hell with 2010, who needs it), this new years started off very scary and fast, but felt fresh and so happy at the same time. i have been so sick and after many months, an operation and a few scary emergency room/hospital visits, i am *knock on wood and pray* that i am doing better. i am better in every sense and so in love with graham, my life, portland, the world. i still need some time to regroup, but i am back.

i have been making tiny blackberry pies and eating them for breakfast, sticky fingers all the time.
so it turns out i'm getting an operation in the near future! it will hopefully fix me for awhile and make me feel a bit better. it's a step in the right direction to making me better, more like my old strong billy goat self, and i am breathing sighs of relief. this has been a very busy and tiring week. i promise i will truly finish all my emails/chores by midweek! you may hold me to that.

this video is beautiful and made me tear up and want to try and do nice things for people everyday.

then after tearing up and being glad, i found the perfect house. yessiree! i would grow all my winter quash and peppermint by the back door.

yesterday and today have been rainy and windy and i love it so much. i found a long lost little red raincoat in the basement and i think when i feel up to it, i will take walks in the rain! something about wind and rain makes me calm, i do not know what it is. poor graham though, he is always hiking his way back and forth to work in this weather, all while impeccably dressed too which makes him a manly man.
today was also another super sick day, ugh. blerg. it is getting tiresome. i can't really sit at my desk too long to paint today which is unfortunate because i have a few little shows coming up.
i have actually been looking a lot more into natural medicine to maybe wean myself off some of the expensive prescriptions i am currently taking. there are lots of plants and natural vitamins i'm looking into, and apparently having tons of zuccini, chard, garlic, blueberries, almonds, spinach, flaxseeds and beet juice in your regular diet works wonders. i already eat pretty healthy (and a lot of those things already) but maybe eating them more and in their "purer forms" will help. i make my own chamomile/lavender and mint/lemon tea at home and that ALWAYS makes me feel at least 2X better than i would without it. i guess i gotta force myself to love beets.

in better news, in about 2 weeks it will be my birthday! i have made a list of things i would like because i am still an impatient 5 year old at heart.

new perfume oil because my old one is all gone. i've been wearing this scent for nearly 6 years and it is my favorite :)

while we're talking about twin peaks, owning this would make my life.
in addition, i love found objects like animal bones, pretty rocks and acorns. store bought objects include things like bargain bin candy bars, beeswax candles, bouncy balls, whiskey and socks.
i think that's about it forever unless i have a fairy godmother willing to present me with a macbook. you may also pray that i am well enough by october 28th so i can go to the janelle monae concert because i love her.
ok i am officially done being greedy... really i promise it does not take much to make me happy, usually red wine and good company do the trick.
i will probably be tired and having more tests done on my actual birthday :(. hopefully i will still be able to hang out with my friends for a bit, maybe eat some pumpkin pie, maybe (definitely) sing black flag songs to graham with the help of a helium balloon!

ok! graham is home and i have to go clean up, make soup, tackle my large email inbox while i have the strength of caffeinated morning tea pulsing through my veins and then tell him new ghost stories.

i love this song a lot, i've listened to it almost every day since i first heard it about 7 years ago.

i was radioactive!

i want thunder storms! i am often too sickly feeling to go outside lately, but the other day i had a real good stretch of feeling awesome and went for a walk. the leaves are barely starting to change. i LOVE portland in fall. it is one of the best things i can think of.
i bought this pretty chocolate bar the other day and it tastes as delicious as i could have hoped. i am a sucker for good dark chocolate and almonds.
among other treats i got a ceramic "not a paper cup" coffee cup. i use it for my tea and soon for travel. i also got a composition notebook. story writing time has officially come. i hope i can finish my comic before christmas. i hope it's good and honest.
last week i had more tests done and y'all, i was actually radioactive for about half a week after aka until today. i kid you not. squeamish people don't read further, they injected radioactive liquid into my veins! and then more weird chemicals! then i lay on a table in what looked like a waffle iron for humans while impressing the nurses with my strength of holding up and reading a 4 pound book at a 90 degree angle from my body while remaining perfectly still (except for the page turning).
it was not a pleasant experience before, during or after, but not as terrible as i imagined.

we built a fort in the room to break up the day to day. there are twinkle lights inside and the room smells like lemongrass. i'm writing more and more everyday thinking about how to go about making an oak wood chair, carrot ginger soup from scratch, knitting mittens while watching twin peaks.

greetings from a girl born in the year of the tiger.
this whole summer i have been sick as a dog. i had been feeling ill a lot this year, but this summer it has seriously gone downhill. on the days i wanted to be jumping in rivers, drinking lemonade with garden mint on our roof, and skateboarding, i was green and sleeping.
i will spare the gruesome details, but i have been making many a round at doctors' offices and filling many a prescription to feel a bit better, and until they figure out what to do with me. bleh. my appearances in person and this small corner of the internet have spotty and i apologize.
in happier news i have decided to grow out my hair. i loved my joan of arc hair but i am ready to have my black, wild woman hair again. i am sure in another couple years i will shave it all off again for fun.

i made a new small painting. it is currently up at ponyclub gallery in portland :) it's about ghostmilk sad mama (a new ghost friend!) and i breathing in the night air together.

i am up early a lot lately. i listen to this at sunrise.

i have been super sensitive to the heat lately (so much so that i had a total meltdown, no pun intended, at 3am the other night and being the nice man graham is, got up and helped me jam our 100lb AC in our bedroom window) and it's such a relief to have a cooler day today. hopefully portland has found a happy medium for weather. i had a cucumber sandwich and fresh watermelon today, it was GLORIOUS. i have also been making little pretend outfits to wear about town while laid up with heat blergness.
now it is time to eat more watermelon and sing with friends who are sitting in my room!

today so far. a mountain of hankies! i had a strange dream about a tribe of aztecs hunting me with spears and screaming at me in spanish in the jungle because i could talk to ghosts and wrote apologies to the families they sacrificed to the gods on their behalf in an english looking cottage in the woods. yeah. anyway, upon waking this morning, i discovered i have lost my voice almost completely, so i'm also going to add a lot of mint tea and honey to the equation.
i tried my hand at homemade tomato soup the other night to ease my chills/pump my body with vitamin c. it turned out really good, and is pretty easy and delicious, also, 100% vegan! the recipe called for more salt than i thought was needed, but put it in anyway. therefore, the soup is a little too salty for my liking, but i just water it down at bit with some water and soymilk and it's delicious. i used fresh basil too from my makeshift herb garden on the kitchen table, but it was worth it because homegrown and fresh ingredients make a universe of difference. pair it with fresh toasted whole grain sourdough, heaven. a strawberry was for desert.

oh and tonight julianna is in a show at ponyclub gallery here in portland. show starts at 6. it will be great! the address is 625 NW Everett St.

i have now resorted to despondently drawing/sketching out the layout of my new booklet while watching "the craft" a million times in a row. i can't wait till it's finished, i feel like i am wrapping up the biggest book report of my life, except i made up the story. sometimes i forget i can draw whatever i want, even if it's really strange. i've discovered a new haunted lady ghost lately and can't stop drawing her!
actually things are not so gloomy at all, i just miss sunlight and breathing through my nose (stuffy eterna). would anyone like to come over and make a pillow and sheet fort with me? you bring the gin, i'll bring the bessie smith albums.

today will consist of reunions (julianna yay you are finally coming home from california adventure!), walks, hugs and hopefully fresh baked pie. this spring has been really something special. i feel like my life is growing into me, or i am growing into something? i am not sure how to put it. it's all gardening, strawberries, mountains, projects, ghosts and writing/drawing at my desk for 7 hour stretches. i'm also trying to start an all girls laurelhurst park skateboard picnic club. we will skate around, have fun, and then have a picnic bbq when we are all scraped up, dirty and hungry after a few hours. sounds like my 14 year old self and a dream come true! it's new and more orderly life, but i like it! set schedules and growing a little bit of roots are not the enemy after all. what a relief.

i listen to this when i am making tea. it makes me feel super happy and tough. tough tea! time to go make it so i can be tough and happy all day long.

(this morning's organized desk process: philosophy books, czech books, candy bars, pretty perfume,lavender diamond, comics, postcards, paint)
we have a seasonal window. this means that from october-may it is hopelessly stuck closed and may-september it is hopelessly stuck open. this morning at 7am sharp, this little bastard came running into our room and leaping around our bed. i was semi sleeping and felt tiny feet running around on my body but was too lazy to move and for some reason, didn't think much of it. graham on the other hand bolted and started yelling "jesus christ! a squirrel! get out of here! AUGHHH!"
our poor squirrel friend was absolutely terrified and ran back out the window. graham was absolutely horrified and had to go back to bed. i ate some apple slices and organized drawings, sketched ideas for new painted lockets, drank a pint of raspberry lemonade, and now i am going to go make breakfast and run errands.

in news unrelated to squirrels, but related to happiness: happy mothers day mom! thank you for reading "go dog go" and "the secret garden" over and over to me non-stop for 6 years without ever losing patience, growing us a tent of greenbeans when we were little, and a million other things.

i got new shoes (finally) and broke them in last night at graham's solo show/stumptown kickoff party with enough free beer to inebriate an army, and then today taking a small walk around stumptown comics fest.

handsome graham (the babe on the far right) was tabling with the awesome julia, her cute bb franklin, and sean. everyone had new comics!

then i stopped at the art bureau table where one of my stories about my milkyway spirit was published in an anthology,the colorful one in the middle of my loot. yay :)

after so much action i finally feel like now i can wind down, put on my fuzzy slippers, watch a thousand episodes of dexter in bed, make a garden shopping list, and eat huge bowls of noodle soup. yesssss such a rad day

i tried my first egg cream in a swanky deli the other day after years (over a decade) of being curious due to "harriet the spy". i must say, i found it pretty delicious! i wonder why they call it an egg cream since it has neither egg, nor cream in it? it's a mystery.

p.s. happy birthday little brother peter aka speedy petey! i remember the day you were born, and how i demanded that you speak to me, then being very sad after dad informed me i had to wait at least another year to get you to talk back to me. also i remember me and you in a little tent of greenbeans wearing homemade satin capes in the backyard, and eating dirt smudged sandwiches like wild children. it was awesome. i cannot even comprehend you are 21. we are so old! easy on the tequila xo

today i did not feel good at all, physically or emotionally. everything seemed to be going kind of bonkers, but then i got cool mail! postcards from sarah mcneil's beautiful shop, and cute little tea towels and a yellow crayon from mieke willems.

THEN, julianna and graham convinced me that everything was going to be ok and to stop being a big baby, and we went to eat at broders with our buddy sarah. i got a grilled cheese tomato with carrot ginger soup, and they gave us these beautiful complimentary little "danish pancakes" with lemon curd, lingonberry jam and apple sauce. it was pitch perfect, everything there is always amazing and so fresh, yes!! i still feel pretty seedy, but loads better than before. there are beautiful flowers everywhere, and i think i just needed a rest; also having great friends helps.

p.s. happy birthday to my little brother chris! he is 19 as of yesterday, which kind of blows my mind. chris i remember pushing you around the pavement in a tonka truck toy (that's how small you were!) and playing "airplane" (for those who are unfamiliar with "airplane", it is a bigger person balancing a little person while lying down with their feet in the air), and now you are huge and can pick me up. that's crazy. happy birthday!

a moody time

i love our jumbly, cozy little room. it keeps us safe from all the rain.
today the weather is super moody and i feel extremely restless, so much so that i will probably spend the rest of the day scarfing down ginger and lavender tea (i am so stoked i can now make my own homemade tea!) to calm my nerves. i don't even know what i am so restless and even a bit sad about! usually i am a pretty quiet, calm person. lately i have too many thoughts zooming around. i'm saving up for a summer-fall garden. i have plans but sometimes lack the funds for them. it's hard trying to live off of drawings, though i appreciate every moment. i will probably end up watching "valerie and her week of wonders", which is my comfort movie going on 3 years. it's probably kind of weird that it's my comfort movie, oh well.

vents aside, julianna picked up a magazine for anja at the asian market and we poked through it a bit (sorry anja, it was just so pretty!) and then i found the outfit i want to wear for the rest of my life. functional and cute, so perfect!

oh! and i have real news! graham, the honey to my oatmeal, the tortilla to my quesadilla, the most awesome human i know, is having his first solo show in less than 2 weeks at guapo comics, here in pdx! he designed the sweet poster shown above! his second issue of blunderbus is coming out too. if you live in portland, you should totally come. you'll see great art, get free booze, be supporting a great and talented guy and a great thing, independent comics.
now it is time for me to go make some tea.

i cut my hair very short (i think it's only about 3 inches left on my head, i call it my "joan of arc" haircut) and have been trying my best to eat only fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and fresh baked bread. in fact, i am baking a new loaf of rosemary bread and eating an orange as i write this! soon i will walk up to the top of mt. tabor and sit and think with music in my ears.
i really like that i live near a mountain called mt. tabor, because the transfiguration always was one of my favorite stories from the bible as a little girl. i think it's partly why i paint mountains so much.

speaking of mountains i am currently working on a painting i started a year and a half ago and hated (about snowy mountains). now that i look at it again, i understand it, and need to finish it instead of my original hissyfit idea of using it for firewood. i am so glad i held onto it!

there are henry darger flowers going completely nuts everywhere!

on one of my walks to mount tabor i made graham a bowtie out of grass. i love going for walks now. for awhile, going outside was a tense chore, but now i am getting better and remembering that my happiness is often determined by how long i am outside. it is also determined by good burritos, which i totally have covered. i have some serious bike plans (paint job, new tires, proper helmet) for the summer where my love of the great outdoors, wind in my hair and retrieving good burritos shall all become united.

the rest of the day will be spent preparing! preparing with fresh coffee and pastries, preparing for parents! they are visiting all week and i am so happy, but it also means that i need to make everything clean and get a lot done. i like to get ready to bikini kill, riot grrrl cleaning is now in session:

i recently got some flowers to make tea with (chamomile, jasmine and lavender) from a local herb shop, and so far i am pretty ready to only make loose tea with fresh herbs from now on. i also got a beautiful mug from this beautiful shop (seen above).
i have been trying my hardest this past week to walk to the top of mount tabor everyday, but yesterday while on my way back down, hurt my foot. now i can barely put pressure on it :(

so today is a prepare more pages for stumptown comics/brainstorm paintings day. i have been working on this one painting forever! it is very big and has enough tiny details to drive me completely insane (i've actually had to use a magnifying glass on this one several times). i am a masochistic painter!

p.s. if you live in portland and haven't been to delta, you totally need to go! our sweet friend sarah invited julianna and i and it's kind of amazing and i am eternally grateful. get the "hey-ya!", it's cucumber infused vodka with fresh cranberry juice, very refreshing and tasty! i am going to try to re-create it this summer to compliment my grilled vegetables + dirty rice all summer long meal plan. it sounds like a pretty heavenly combo to me.

surprise macaron days with julianna. YES. i think they are rose, violet and pistachio. my favorite kind of flavors.

i decided on these moscot glasses since i have no vision care anymore (THANKS AMERICA edit, now with no sarcasm!nevermind thank you obama), and cannot afford contacts anymore. i think they're pretty sharp. they remind me of truman capote glasses which is fitting since we have the same birthday.
also, somehow my head smells like honeysuckle. i like it.
these spring days are pretty great so far! like this (below) but instead of being tragic sebastians we are all happy sebastians!

last night and today was kind of like the wind coming back into my sails. we (meaning the usual trio of julianna, graham and myself) went out with our friends to breakfast. it was wonderful! you'd never believe it by looking at those magnificent eggs, but the best part of my breakfast was the tea which was jasmine-lavender. i need to figure out the proper plants to buy so that i can re-create it all summer long.
later on, graham and i went for a walk:

lately i am deeply interested in palmistry, rock power, homemade green tea and the warm weather folklore of the deep south.

i don't know how it would feel to be a mexican american woman with gardenias and sweet tea on her front porch in the deep south (probably kind of weird or scary in reality? perhaps only humid?) but i can't help but romanticize what it is as a place. summer must be around the corner because that is when i start to romanticize everything.

portland isn't nearly as dark and dreary as everyone (wusses) complains it is. the winters here are gone in one small flurry and the blink of an eye. this is sad for me because i adore cold weather.

but the flowers are so pretty!
now i am writing to remember things i did today because diaries are important and i made a resolution to record things better than i used to:

earl grey, cucumber and cream cheese sandwich, remembering books i love and i think that "true" backwards and underlined by a sprig of wild greenery is a very lovely tattoo idea. i wish i knew where the "true" image came from because i am in love with it.

one of the best music videos and prettiest songs! it's one of those very special songs that always makes me feel better no matter how badly things are going or how rotten i feel. everyone should sing along to it right now so we can all actually be singing together!
my show is tomorrow and i always feel skiddish before an opening. i kind of started showing my work in galleries on accident (it was discovered on a train to south central, los angeles and i was working as a truck unloader at the time), and have been doing it as a meager income since i was about 19. i do not feel like a real art person (and nor am i really), but more like a really awkward girl who draws her made up stories. it's scary to know i have an audience (no matter how small) besides myself, friends and the various feral animals that have wandered in and out of my rooms. whether it lasts forever or ends today, it frightens and humbles me and has helped me make my life into some kind of wonderful.
anyway, thank you small group of very kind people i have rooting for me (especially you julianna and graham, the loves of my life and best roommates ever and sharers of endless piles of pizza/life/bloody marys), thank you <3

demon hands, it's the worst!
i have a solo show next week called "a crying shame" at lebasse gallery. preparing for it has slowly made me lose my feeble mind, but i am really happy with my paintings and will be glad to be in los angeles with my family to eat fresh from the garden tomato soup, talk to my little brothers, maybe do a little window installation and see the ocean. it is such a nice feeling to get the stories in my head out onto little planks of wood. it's like a non wizard version of a pensieve. i feel like a mint leaf. i hope that makes sense to you but don't blame you if it doesn't.

i love this song, it has made me use the expression "it's the worst" way too much, but i don't mind because it's often appropriate. i am also posting it in honor of mimi (the opposite of a creep) who just had a big ole birthday! happy belated birthday mimi i love you!

then i didn't feel good with flu residual and watched "me without you" for the umpteenth time and sobbed into my blackberry english muffin and tea.

ok first of all it snowed. hallejujah! i love snow. i did an appreciation snow dance to this song in my granny pajamas. then i realized people could see in the apartment. harderbetterfasterstronger snow INDEED.

then we got amazing post christmas packages from graham's parental units. among other neat things, graham and i got beautiful teacups. we adore everything! thank you so much <3

then the excitement was too much for graham and he got an earache so bad that we have an emergency doctor's appointment later tonight. i expect i will get a lot of drawing done in the waiting room. poor bunny. despite feeling awful, the man will still put on a bowtie, and that is why i love him.

new years is going to be interesting. or nerdy. maybe both. i am sure it will involve champagne, violent femmes singalongs and tacos at some point.
i apologize if you read this thing expecting me to be exciting eventually. i am a complete dork, and usually stay at my desk painting and drawing all the time, but appreciate your company and wish we were all friends (those handful of you who read this who do not know me in real life but i wish we did) so i could make you some raspberry rhubarb pie.

i got super sick in the wee hours of friday morning and the flubugs in my system have been partying ever since. i thought i was getting better until tonight, nooooo.
so please excuse my empty etsy update promise, if i said i'd hang out with you, and if i promised other nice things that would happen this weekend that didn't happen. i am sorry, they will hopefully happen soon. i just do not feel like doing much besides being a slug.
in other news, while sipping juice and wrapping my feet in a heating blanket, i ordered myself a present, this book:

in case you do not know this book (which you might want to fix right away), it's about two little kids, a sister and her little brother, who decide they are bored and fed up with life and run away from home to live in the metropolitan museum of art. it's great, possibly on the same level as phantom tollbooth and harriet the spy. oh 1960s child literature, how i love thee.

back from family trips! now eating tortilla soup and also feeling kind of gross.
i have that awful feeling you get before you get sick that you've put off for weeks with airborne, tea and denial, but then you wake up with a headache and the touch of anything cold on bare skin hurts. i am going to continue ignoring this for as long as possible because the amount of things i have to do by the new year scares me.

in much more important news, graham surprised me with a tree! we decorated it with ornaments from mexico and things i made when i was three.
i need to take more pictures of my life adventures so i can remember more.

my mom and i have matching teapots and teacups so i put it in there with my fairie rings and milkyway spirits and tea ghosts.
in other news i am with my whole family for the weekend and will be hanging out with them in the desert (where much of my family is located). i am so happy to see them because this little trip was a surprise and i missed them a lot!

a normal day

i got much needed new shoes! they are only $8 too! i adore their packaging almost as much as the shoes themselves. they are commonly meant for taichi practice, but since i do not know how to do taichi, i plan to use them for everything else since they are very comfy and make you feel like you can jump around. the word on the side supposedly means "warrior" in chinese too. all in all, i am pretty sure i have found the sneaker i will be wearing the rest of my life.

then i doodled around and brainstormed and painted some sea waves and apple trees with séances and foxes while watching spooky ghost shows and debated (around the 6 p.m. mark) whether to switch from the earl grey tea i've been drinking all day to wine. hmmmm. i decided to water my plants and make a grilled cheese tomato sandwich instead.

also, i am so excited for the holidays!!! i hung these little decorations my mom sent me up in our window to nat king cole last night, and tomorrow i am getting twinkle lights and a little pine wreath. it makes me really happy to hear these songs and decorate, but it also made me miss my family. my mom would play his christmas album 24 hour a day in december when my brothers and i were small (much to my dad's chagrin). we would eat roasted tomatoes&potatoes, quesadillas, homemade sugar cookies in the shape of hearts and red hots all month.

i have a couple shows and comics coming up that are occupying most of my time when i am not documenting new sneakers and christmas memories, so i will post about those very soon as well.

tomorrow i am traveling to the wilderness of PA with graham for thanksgiving! it will be my first time "back east" in my whole life.

i really love my yellow wooly sweater from the 25 cent bin. i wear it almost everyday. i just had to let you know.
graham and i have decided to be slugs today and play a million hours of video games (i am addicted to earthbound now that the weather has been too rainy for me to even attempt afternoon constitutionals to mt. tabor), eat a bunch of greenbeans, work on painting, and bake more rosemary bread. he is the best person to be a slug with. he will sit with you being awesome for hours.

when i paint, draw and write, i often (and lately, almost exclusively) listen to sacred harp singing, or "sharp note" sung hymns. it's the most haunting and joyful sounding music i've ever heard.

after a self induced, internal hissyfit, i re-ribboned my old typewriter from the 20s again. works like a charm. i felt better.

completed the family tree in our room.
then i looked at beautiful things i have saved to graham's computer

a travel home for wanderlusters, desert rocks and mountains. i will never get tired of looking at or drawing mountains.
p.s. it has been brought to my attention my posts have not updated themselves in anyone's google reader thingy for almost a year! does anyone know how i can fix this?

julianna has gone back to michigan for the whole winter which makes me sad :(
then i found out a bunch of etsy orders i literally sent out months ago never got sent. they just sat in a pile at the post office forgotten. you have no idea what rage this has caused me. between my computer breaking forever, spotty internet access and a bunch of art show work coming and going and driving me insane and then this happened. to people who have not gotten orders yet, i am so sorry. a similar thing happened to me around this time last year, give or take a month. portland has the worst postal system ever. on another tangent, i ordered some stuff from ebay that took 1 month to get here after the post office assured me it had been delivered the first week it was sent out. RAGE, RAGE!!! i know i am not the only person in portland who's had similar dumb problems, but i feel particularly cursed by the u.s.p.s. here. they have made me loose a lot of money on lost orders and inconvenienced a lot of my customers/friends/family members/myself.
ugh.

the show opens tonight! i am exhausted but really, really happy. i am o.k. with my work for the first time in awhile, and that feels good. everyone else's stuff looks awesome, and i wish our glitter mountain installation made of autumn sweaters was a real or at least findable place.

i have new warm socks!

and had a very wonderful lunch consisting of:
*carrot ginger soup
*grilled swiss and tomato sandwich
*earl grey tea with bergamot
how nice huh? my belly sure thought so.

graham enjoys looking over my shoulder. hello graham! while i am on the subject of graham here is a little tiny raccoon skull he found in a river when was 9 and growing up in amish country. it hangs out in our room on the bookstand and it's one of my favorite things.

the show is coming in 4 days so i need to get to work again and stop reading pinecone folklore stories.

i am in love with this song by ainjel emme. it makes me think of my cold days in the mountains (as seen above), and it is perfect. i have been a fan of her's since i was a teeny 11 year old with grass stained knees, and i am honored to not only be a huge fan of this mighty lady, but call her a friend.
i just realized it is nearly 5 a.m. here! sometimes not even tea, warm socks, or even reading moomin can cure my awful insomnia, so this is a good song to hum to at those times.

am i the only sleepless one? does anyone out there have abominable sleeping patterns too? i am surrounded by good, wholesome eggs who go to bed and wake up at reasonable hours so i feel like a black sheep.

look at this video of ainjel singing to the trees of oregon at night and freezing to death but shrugging it off admirably. she stayed with us recently because she was on a mini tour and i got to be camera lady (you can hear me cheer at the end) :)
